Preparing for the arrival of your little one is such an exciting time, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming. One of the key tasks on your to-do list is packing your hospital bag, and making sure you have everything you need for delivery and your stay will help you feel more at ease when the big day arrives. As a Utah County newborn photographer, I know the importance of capturing those first moments with your baby, but before we get to that, let’s talk about what to bring with you to the hospital.
Birth Plan and Important Documents – Be sure to bring any birth plan or medical documents you may need. This includes your ID, insurance information, and any paperwork related to your pregnancy and delivery.
Comfortable Clothing – After delivery, you’ll want to feel comfortable. Pack loose-fitting clothes, such as a cozy robe, nightgown, or a soft outfit to wear when you’re ready to leave the hospital. Don’t forget extra underwear and socks!
Toiletries – While some hospitals provide basics, bringing your own toiletries can make you more prepared. A toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, shampoo, soap, deodorant, feminine products and lip balm are a must. Don’t forget any items that will help you feel refreshed and pampered.
Snacks and Drinks – Labor can be long, and you’ll need energy. Pack your favorite snacks and drinks (or any specific requests your hospital allows). Hydration is key!
Phone and Chargers – You’ll want to stay connected with family and friends, so be sure to pack your phone and charger. Consider bringing a portable charger just in case!
Outfits for Baby – Bring a couple of outfits for your newborn, including onesies, hats, and socks. Hospitals usually provide blankets, but you might want to bring your own special swaddle or outfit for extra warmth.
Diapers and Wipes – Hospitals typically provide diapers and wipes, but it’s always a good idea to bring a few extras of your own just in case.
Baby Blanket – A soft, cozy blanket is perfect for your baby’s first moments with you. You may also want to bring a cute blanket for photos or your baby’s first outfit.
Car Seat – Don’t forget the car seat! Make sure it’s installed correctly before you head to the hospital so you can safely take your little one home.
Comfortable Clothes and Snacks – Your partner will want to stay comfortable too! Pack extra clothes, snacks, and drinks for them to enjoy during your time in the hospital. Most hospitals don’t provide food for your partner so this is a must!
Camera or Phone – Your partner may want to capture those first moments as well. Ensure they have a camera or phone with enough storage and charge.
Music and Headphones – Create a calming atmosphere for labor by bringing along your favorite playlist or soothing music. Headphones can also help block out any noise and keep you relaxed.
Entertainment – The anticipation of waiting for your baby to get here can be overwhelming and labor can be long. Bring a good book or laptop to keep your mind busy.
A Pillow or Blanket from Home – Hospitals can sometimes be a bit chilly or uncomfortable, so bringing a cozy pillow or blanket can help make the experience more comfortable.
While you’re packing for the hospital and preparing for your baby’s arrival, don’t forget to think ahead about capturing those precious first moments with your little one. A newborn session is a wonderful way to preserve the memories of your baby’s early days, and I’d love to help you document this special time. Whether you choose a posed newborn session or a lifestyle newborn session, I’m here to ensure your photos are as unique as your family.
